The Old Barn

The stunning view from The Old Barn patio

The Old Barn is at the far end of the farmyard. It’s the last building before the top of Sugar Loaf.

It is a traditional Welsh barn, with arrow-slit windows, and triangular holes to let barn owls into the building to keep the mice out.

We have kept all the original features, and added modern comforts and conveniences.

We’ve used traditional Welsh slate, oak and lime and sheep’s wool insulation, allowing the building to breathe, and an air source heat pump runs the underfloor heating. There is even custom-built accommodation for the bats and swallows……

Cosy and Contemporary
beautiful interior of The Old Barn

Inside, The Old Barn is a stylish mix of old and new, with contemporary furniture and lighting alongside traditional oak timbers and antiques.

The large downstairs room has oak beams and a limecrete floor. It is shared between:

The kitchen – superbly equipped – range cooker, large fridge freezer and dishwasher. Homemade cake and eggs from our free-range ducks and hens are there to welcome you, and organic lamb from the farm is available

On the ground floor

The dining room has a large oak table, and plenty of cutlery, crockery and glassware

In the living room a woodburner gives a cosy feel on chillier days, and there are comfy sofas and chairs, wi-fi, radio/CD player/i-pod dock, DVD player, games and loads of books.  Plus amazing views of Sugar Loaf from the sofa!

The utility room houses the washing machine and provides plenty of space for your outdoor gear.  Off here is a small toilet and basin.

Upstairs….

……….is reached by a cast iron spiral staircase, leading to the beamed landing and: West Bedroom  – a bright and sunny room, with solid oak floor, beamed ceiling, large oak double bed, armchair, dressing table and antique oak wardrobe.

East Bedroom  – a cosy space, with two roomy 3’6” oak beds, beamed ceiling  and a lovely old oak settle.  Just outside on the landing is huge Liberty print sofa. Perched above the living room, this is a great place for relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere of the barn.

Family bathroom with roll top cast-iron bath

The Bat Room – entered from the front courtyard, with a (well sealed) loft for lesser horseshoe bats just above it.  Antique mahogany king-size bed, beamed ceiling, dressing table and oak wardrobe.  Ensuite wetroom.

This room is wheelchair accessible.

Outside

Folding oak doors lead out from the living room to sunny seating areas to north and south. Off the front courtyard is an old byre with table tennis and table football.  Barbecue provided.

“……Magical, peaceful setting yet close to the market town. Walks straight from the barn onto the hills.  A place to unwind but within reach of many attractions. Immaculate and well thought out accommodation of a very high standard. We were left to discover its delights ourselves including homemade cake, eggs and wine. Our favourite cottage to date and one we will definitely return to.  Helen
